Hey everyone! Welcome to another SOAR episode from this season’s theme of book trailers for books that provide “food for thought.” If you haven’t already, be sure to give a listen to last week’s episode on the book “Fahrenheit 451.” Today’s episode is on the book “1984,” an awe-inspiring dystopian novel that follows the protagonist Winston Smith, who lives in a world where the ruling party can watch anyone from anywhere using the telescreens that are all over the place. It seems that everywhere he looks, Winston sees the face of Big Brother, the leader of the ruling party. In this future world, even thinking of committing a crime can get you arrested for thoughtcrime and given extreme punishment. The party has created a new language called newspeak, which aims to restrict thought and consistently cuts out words. Winston is one of few who has not been completely taken over by society and dislikes the party and the way they prohibit free thought and individuality. He illegally purchases a diary to write his “criminal” opinions that criticize the party. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth, where he rewrites news articles and historical documents as per the needs of the ruling party. Truth becomes what the party dictates. He becomes nervous as if anyone catches him writing in the diary or finds it, he could go to jail for quite some time. He sees a beautiful dark-haired girl and thinks she must be a spy for the party, which he believes even more when she follows him into a poorer neighborhood in London. She hands him a note and he believes it must be a terrible threat or warning. What is on the note? Why did this girl give it to him? Who is she? Will Winston be caught by the party? Will Winston be able to change the ways of this terrible dystopian society? Read to find out and join this perilous adventure amidst a world where big brother is always watching.

For me, this book kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through and had so many twists that I was not expecting at all. This book is full of action, adventure, mystery, thrill, suspense, lessons, dystopia, friendship, family, love, hope, and is truly a book that I would recommend. Thank you so much for listening! If you enjoyed today’s episode, be sure to leave a rating and review and to spread the word about SOAR to help achieve its goal of promoting reading. I implore you to SOAR.
